Turkey.... The New Pork?

Just so you know, a few days ago I was tempted while shopping in my local organic grocery store by the locally farmed, range fed turkey breakfast sausages in all natural casings (of course). They were sitting there, innocently, next to the pork variation of the same. Once glance at the nutrition label and it was easy to see the turkey was the clear lean meat leader in this race. I then looked at the belly that medical school and my own poor self-care helped to create these last years and reluctantly, but somewhat hopefully, I reached for the turkey.

Tonight I came home and after a busy day in the OR without time for food or a break I decided to have breakfast for dinner, one of my favorites. I grilled up (on a grill) the well marketed turkey breakfast links and fried an egg from my friend's farm, all naturally grass fed chickens of course, and slid them all onto a simple white plate. How good is this, farm raised, grass fed all natural breakfast from local producers right here in the Pacific Northwest. Well, after about 2 or 3 bites I was suddenly aware, again, of a lesson I have learned time and again with turkey sausage.

PORK TASTES WAY BETTER THAN TURKEY ... UNLESS IT IS THANKSGIVING! Hands down, pork sausage is far superior, in all forms, to that white meat imposter, now matter how much spice and salt you add. The End.

Best LA Sign

This is the best sign I have seen in LA so far! It reminds me that you must always LOCK YOUR BIKE when leaving it somewhere.... I just finished my Step2 CS and it was a fast trip. Happy it is over as I am now nearly finished with the LAST EXAM I will EVER have to take in medical school! I still have the computerized portion of the test to take which is another 9 hour exam in front of a computer. That is scheduled for Sept 4th and I am going to take it in Utah while I am on my away EM rotation in Salt Lake City.

Step 2 CS was not as bad as I thought it would be. Pretty artificial and fatiguing like most these types of tests, but place was nice and the Hacienda Hotel near the testing site was perfect. Inexpensive, clean and had a nice outside area to sit and study next to a fireplace with a Corona the night before! The flights from Seattle are fast and the shuttle from the hotel worked great. They let us store our bags in the AM before we went to the exam when we checked out and then we just shuttled back to the airport after the exam.

Now I have about one week to finish my anesthesiology rotation, prepare for Step-2 CK and get my house in order and packed for the trip to Utah. I will be leaving next weekend and will be there one month. I am driving out with my friend Ben Constance who also has an away rotation there at the same time. I will then fly to Maine (Hooray! Maine!) for an away rotation in Portland, ME in EM and finally back home at the end of October. I am tired of travelling, that is for sure.

Now THIS is Power Procrastination!

I must say that my new iPhone 3G truly is the "one phone" when it comes to procrastination! Twice as fast, half the price and about FOUR TIMES the distraction! I have been a PC guy since about 1990 but I am seriously thinking of updating my wardrobe and becoming a Mac!

Since I have purchased this phone I have wasted procrastinated for approximately 6 hours while I added programs, customized it, played with the new ePocrates and Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards and just gazed in awe at my precious....  Now that is constructive!

I must say it is far superior in many ways to my old Treo 750 that I am selling on eBay, but it is not perfect. My Treo had a keyboard which was nice and there is more software (medical) for it available (but probably not for long). The iphone Netter's flash cards is so superior to either the Treo version or the actual paper flash cards you buy in a store it is not funny. I am sad that the 5-Minute EM Consult and the 5-Minute Clinical Consult which I thought were available are actually "web apps" still, which does not work well when in a hospital without Wi-Fi, but I am told they are soon to be ready...

The screen is gorgeous, the typing is accurate with the auto-correction, the GPS works great, the camera is decent and all in all it is simple and user friendly. Now to get some studying done....
